My chat with some fashion bloggers.

Preface: So I had to write a feature article on anything I wanted for one of my Uni classes. I decided to do mine on fashion blogging/bloggers. It's pretty much a light and fluffy article, so don't hold that against me. It also isn't written very well but I thought I'd chuck it up. Thankfully for me the ladies I interviewed are articulate and ones whose blogs I've loved for a while now. Thanks again. xx

A woman positions her camera in her bedroom and sets the self timer to document her outfit for the day, detailing the items worn with close up shots of the detailing. This may seem like an act of vanity and deep rooted narcissism but this photo will end up on her blog which focuses on her style and read by a community of like minded people.

Fashion blogs cover a multitude of subjects within the industry encompassing such aspects as; personal style/outfit posts, DIY tips, opinion pieces, inspiration, new collections, web stores and fashion events like runway and launch parties. Through popular blogging websites like: Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr, bloggers can easily post text and photos and design the layout of their website with ease while connecting to others, which they can converse and network with.

Some notable fashion bloggers that have turned a hobby into a career are 14 year old Tavi Gevinson from The Style Rookie (www.thestylerookie.com) and Scott Schuman otherwise known as The Satorialist (www.thesartorialist.blogspot.com). Both have utilised the success of their blogs to further themselves in the fashion world.

Gevinson, came to notoriety due to her quirky style and the fact that she was unusually young compared to others doing the same thing. Gaining a large cult following who was a relative industry outsider has opened a vast amount of opportunities for the now 14 year old, including such things as; attending exclusive fashion shows and launch parties, interviewed and on the cover of magazines and even being inspiration for a line for Target from sister designers, Rodarte.

Schuman on the other hand was already a part of the industry, working in sales and marketing for high-end designers like Valentino and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Moving onto photography, Shuman showcased not only his talent for taking pictures but his interest in street fashion and what the “real people” were wearing from day to day.

The popularity for both these blogs, and others, showcases the connect people have with seeing how other ordinary people dress and in most cases without having to spend an exorbitant amount of money on high-end outfits.

I spoke to three bloggers from three corners of the world, who I found to have great fashion posts, amazing style and a decent amount of readers.

Sarah of Pandoras Box

MJ is a fashion blogger from England, has been blogging for 18 months and who explains her blog, Dreaming Spires and Old Car Tyres, as “mostly featuring outfit posts and details, as well as occasional articles on issues in fashion. It is, however, primarily a personal style blog.”

Sarah is a fashion blogger from the United States has been blogging for two years and whose blog, Pandora’s Box, features “mostly personal style photos. (Read: Me acting out childhood fantasies of being a model.) Occasionally I’ll feature fashion shows or store openings I’m invited to in Los Angeles.”

Bronny a local Melbourne blogger covers mostly post photos of my outfits and occasionally review products on her blog Fat Aus.

I also spoke to a frequent fashion blog reader, Kim Davis, on her perceptions on fashion blogs and why she enjoys reading them.

A question that continually comes up when talking about fashion bloggers is “what is the role of a fashion blogger in the fashion industry, if any at all?” MJ feels accessibility and catering to a specific audience determines the role; “The type of community of blogs that I am involved in plays a role, I think, in low-level budget and high-street fashion and provides inspiration for young people with limited budgets. While there are high-level designer blogs which feel very much like online magazine, with editorial-level shots and expensive clothes, I think that the niche blogs are most adept at filling that of a more personal experience, with interaction between the blogger and followers and clothes which are accessible as opposed to inspirational.”

Sarah thinks of the role in the same vein, “Ideally, I think they’re expected to present an honest opinion about products and to provide “real world” inspiration. Like a friendlier, less intimidating version of a magazine.”

Bronny of Fat Aus

Because Bronny’s blog fits into the category of plus size blogging the role her blog plays in the fashion industry takes on a different purpose than the others. “I think plus sized bloggers are really valuable to other plus sized women in terms of showing how things fit/what sizing is like since a lot of plus sized women (especially Australians) shop online. I've noticed a lot of plus sized retailers are involved in reading plus sized blogs, sending samples and listening to what bloggers are saying about what styles of clothes they want made in bigger sizes.”

Because there are so many blogs, many of whom have daily posts with a multitude of high end clothes, there could be a pressure for others to showcase expensive items of clothing. Sarah feels there is some pressure to showcase more expensive and high-end outfits. “I feel that standout designer items grab more attention because people want what they can’t have. I find this unfortunate; it creates an uneven playing field. Luckily, I work at a luxury boutique where I’m allowed to “pull” items for a day or two to play with. Anything on my blog that costs over $100, it probably isn't mine.”

There seems to be the same pressure to produce magazine quality photographs as bloggers keep upping the ante with the photos they produce. A fashion blogger stereotype that has come about is that many fashion bloggers get their photographer boyfriends to take professional looking photos which are helped by the fact that many of these women look like models of duty (MOD’s).

MJ explains about if she feels there any pressure to produce magazine quality photographs; “To a certain extent, yes. I always want to show off my outfits to the best of my ability, naturally, but I’m also aware of the appeal of my blog as a low-level budget blog. Therefore, magazine-quality photos might damage the intentionally non-magazine-like feel of my blog, and I don’t beat myself up too much about my inability to actually produce magazine quality photos.”

Kim Davis while not a fashion blogger herself does enjoy reading other peoples. “While it is nice to look at high quality photography, it can sometimes take away the real connection between the reader and blogger. The flaws are what make it relatable to me.”

A criticism of fashion bloggers is that they are utilised and used by the fashion industry as a mouthpiece for their own marketing agenda. These sites have moved on from being a mere online journal or inspiration board but a commodity in their own right. Advertisers from fashion companies would be idiotic to not try and utilise the amount of hits some of the more popular sites get by getting their advertisements or clothes featured.

MJ takes part in a community blogging project called Project Take 10, where ten bloggers receive one item of clothing every month or so and their task is to style it. “I think my rule generally is to only accept an item if it is in line with the aesthetic and message of my blog: basically, if I like it and would like to read about it. With take10 it is more of a challenge, as the point is to style up items that may or may not be to your personal tastes, but I think that is the attraction of the project as incorporating something into your personal style is something I enjoy reading in other blogs and am therefore happy to accept the items.”

But when does this gifting of items become more like cash for comments and can a person objectively review an item when they received that free and may possibly feel obliged to speak favourably about the item?

Through the previously mentioned Project Take 10 MJ receives free items of clothing and features them on her blog but doesn’t feel obliged to speak kindly about them. “I received a jumper as part of the project take10 challenge which I absolutely hated. We normally have a say in which item we receive, from deciding the exact item and voting on it between us, to voting on a yes-or-no decision regarding an offered item. In this case the company offered us an item which we agreed upon, and then sent us something completely different (and horrible). I stated categorically that I did not like the item, and had styled it up to the best of my ability (as did a number of the other bloggers). The company wasn’t happy that we’d said this, but I felt it was a good reminder to PRs that you can’t buy good press with bloggers, and I hope it helped create an impression of credibility on my blog.”

Sarah has also received free items but has a different ethos, “I’ve received stuff and never worn it. I think the whole point is to pick and choose. Readers won’t trust your opinion if you promote whatever item just because it was given to you for free. People read blogs for their honesty.”

There are of course some downsides that come with fashion blogging, the anonymity of the internet allows readers to make snarky and insulting comments to the blogger, this may discourage them from writing a blog but most expect some form of criticism at some point.

More than the criticism, the bloggers I interviewed found their biggest peeves about being a fashion blogger came from other bloggers. Bronny described her biggest peeves, “I think that once a blog is really famous and all of their clothes are 'gifted' and cost $5000 it makes the blog boring, I find myself interested in blogs that are about regular people and the clothes they buy/wear rather than bloggers who end up spending all their time at fashion shows etc. In other blogs I hate it when people refer to their boyfriend/husbands by weird code name.”

Although there are of course the bad things that come with fashion blogging, when I asked the ladies if they would encourage others to take up fashion blogging there was a resounding “yes!” MJ elaborated with some handy advice “For the most part, the benefits far outweigh the effort you put in, and it’s really just fun. I would however advise people to consider the amount of time they want to put in before they start a blog, though: I probably spend about an hour a day (sometimes less) on it, and it takes a certain amount of work to get a blog off the ground, so you must be prepared if you want it to be successful!”

Bronny also encouraged others to join in the fashion blogging world, “I definitely encourage people to take up blogging! More because of the amazing people you can meet through blogging rather than for fame or fortune.”

While fashion bloggers are become the “darlings” of the fashion world, being invited to fashion events, being sent expensive items of clothing and the exclusivity of getting your brands advertisement on a high traffic website; does the fashion blogger hold any credibility within the industry?

The rigid, exclusivity and snobbery seems to be fading according to Bronny, “I think fashion bloggers are getting more and more credibility all the time.It seems like a lot of people in the fashion industry resent bloggers because they haven't gone to school or worked their way through the ranks but I think that attitude is starting to change as people realise the influence fashion bloggers can have.”

Kim feels the same, “That’s one of the reasons I like reading fashion blogs, these are people that don’t have the pretentiousness of working closely within the industry. They are the people in the street and know what’s fashionable and with a realistic price limit.”

Fashion blogging doesn’t seem to be going away with its popularity only increasing as more and more people sign up for their own site.

MJ leaves us with this thought, “With the immediacy of content on the internet, I think blogging will become more and more relevant, as monthly or weekly magazines become slower with the news. However, I do worry about the increasing popularity of blogs meaning that many more excellent blogs do not receive the attention they deserve. For now, though, I don’t see blogging as a medium leaving any time soon!”

Sort of back again! Long time no blog! Well I've been busy with Uni as usual, I had a couple of 2500 word essays to get through and now I'm studying for my Culture & Society and News & Politics exams coming up next week. I'm seriously considering just buying my Journalism degree from the "University of Phoenix" online.

Other than that I started a new job bartending at a cosy little bar in the city, so that's pretty fun although extremely hard to suppress my alcoholic tendencies while I'm working. I haven't even had time to go socialise much which is extremely painful considering I spent the majority of this years weekends out. I have my birthday coming up next weekend so I'll pop some pics up then.

Currently leopard print and bronzers seems to be my new love and I still haven't grown out of wearing band tshirts all the time. I've taken out two of my nose rings and I have an addiction to fake tan. I think I've been watching too much Jersey Shore. But seriously, how cute is Snooki?! I want to put her in my pocket.

I realised I've had this blog for ages now and I've never actually posted a proper outfit post. I see "plus size" bloggers and I see how gorgeous they look and I applaud those who actually can do it, I feel kind of ridiculous that I can't. But I'm seriously never happy with my body, even when I was skinnier. Ugh I don't know! This comes across as inarticulate and whiny but I needed to vent.

Thanks again for all the comments, even when I only seem to post monthly. Today I'll make an effort to get around to commenting. I do still read everyones while I'm procrastinating study but never get around to commenting! Hope all is well and I'll be back next week with my quarter life crisis (25th) birthday shots, hopefully taken before I'm too drunk and trying to hug strangers while stroking their face.

Hey everyone!

I'm bacckkkkk. Well sort of... Uni has definitely calmed down a lot so I can now blog a little more often and keep up on all your posts. I'm onto my new subjects at Uni (News & Politics and Society & Culture) and I'm actually enjoying them so far. Thanks for all your lovely comments, they're actually really nice to read when I'm stressing about deadlines and wanting to get into the foetal position and rock side to side. Although that may be a little melodramatic.

Yet again, I bring poor quality webcam photos to the proverbial blogging table but seriously, that's about as good as it's going to get. I do kind of like how they look like shitty electro album covers though. My poor cat Morpheus was dragged into a photoshoot yet again. Does anyone else feel narcissistic taking photos of them self?

Again I've been slack with the posts. If I can work out what month we're in and sift through my numerous amount of picture folders; here's what I've been up to over the past few month. It feels like I've posted some of the photos before but maybe that's because I look like I'm wearing similar outfits over and over again. After 3 months of going out every single weekend, it's hard to mix it up. I am getting some new stuff from ASOS soon so hopefully that will inject some variety into my black/gold/red lipstick getup.

KJ and I went to get tattoos yesterday. Here is mine on the back of my neck. So thanks cute boy tattooist. It's a quote from Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut used ironically in reference to death.

Just a quick one. Had a very unproductive day sitting in bed watching Never Mind The Buzzcocks Season 23 and chain smoking. Headed out to the casino last night for Frannys 22nd. Drank too much, watched bits of the footy and soccer then got home and felt the drunken urge to take webcam photos with the cat.

Heading out with KJ and Andrew tonight. Going to get on the tequila shots. I'm getting far too old to be drinking three nights in a row. Anyways, as the prophet Steven Patrick Morrissey said "I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear" .... so I'll probably just wear the same as last night.

Black lace, gold jewellery and red lipstick seems to be a reoccurring theme anyway.

Sorry I've been so slack but Joellen inspired me to do a post. I've been up to my ears with Uni, procrastinating about Uni and then making the most of my weekends by binge drinking with friends. Take the time and rewind to 2002. The smell of a fresh millennium, carrying a new era of music. It was huge year for Queens of the Stone Age, releasing their third album Songs for the Deaf, which has sold over a million copies worldwide.

With the most brutal line up, this was the Queens at their prime: Dave Grohl (Drumming legend), Josh Homme (Lead/Backing vocals/Rhythm Guitar), Mark Lanegan (Guest Lead Vocals), Nick Oliveri (Bass) and Dean Ween (Lead Guitar). This melting pot of musicians makes for a 15 track masterpiece that cannot be touched.

Every song can only be described as being in a fight. The songs punch you in the face, bite at your eyes and leave your head pounding and bruised… but in a good way! I imagine this album is what the Devil plays in his living room.

Anybody who knows Queens of the Stone Age’s previous or later albums will know, they are not worried about catering for a specific audience. This is raw rock as it should be. There was so much hype surrounding this album, with their second album being released 2 years prior.

The highly successful single “No One Knows” was played to death on radio stations everywhere and for good reason. With a pumping rhythm that would have grandmothers around the world head banging, this song really just makes you want to break stuff.

Personally, the highlight track on the album is “A Song For the Dead”. With huge instrument sounds: walls of guitar, a driving bass line, raw and unaffected drums and not to mention the raspy vocals of Lanegan, this song is a celebration of insanity. Slight stops, only to jump out and yell and spit in your face.

Another highlight would have to be “Go With the Flow”. I really believe this song and what all instruments are communicating. This song has the ability to pick you up and take you above all the shit you’re dealing with. Definitely check this one out.

The only real criticism I can sort of understand is consistency. Many would argue that with so many hard-hitting songs, perhaps there should be more mellowed out and slower songs. But is that really necessary? No way! I don’t think the line up sat down and actually thought about how the album would come together, they just made it and that’s the way music should be made.

This album deserves a place up there with the best of all time. Well, with a Josh Homme and Dave Grohl project, how can you go wrong?

Oh hey there. Nothing too exciting happening on my end, just a quick update if anyone was worried that I carked it. I dyed my hair black again being sick of the 5 inch regrowth. It's hard to tell due to my late night webcam photo. My sister gets married in about a month and just the usual uni and writing deal. I'll do some outfit posts soon!

Party pics from Shane's Birthday.

I've been away for awhile. Had a housewarming party on Friday night where I got too drunk and my skirt fell down (embarrassingly hilarious), then a bender on Saturday where I didn't climb into bed until 7am. So those nights have really thrown out my University work schedule, catch up week this week. Don't worry you'll only have to hear my complain about study for another three years.

I was trying to think how I could get more followers and the only option besides whoring myself out was to put outfit posts up, although all you skinny bloggers make me feel like a whale so I think I'll take a pass on that one. I can live with 57. It's 50 more than I thought I'd ever have reading my rants.

Taking a super quick break from the most boring subject - Introduction To Screen Analysis, to do a quick post. Currently the only thing keeping me sane whilst trying to train my brain to study again is listening to heaps of Rap music really loud.

Trying to increase my jewellery collection seeing as most of my clothes are black. Picked these up whilst on the hunt for bridesmaid dresses with my sister and the other bridesmaids. Top one is from Diva for about $20 and the second is just a hand made multi chain gold necklace with stuff I found in Spotlight.

Thanks for all your shoe advice about where to get some Oxfords! Australia is such a bitch for postage on most things, but I saw some that i'll save up for.
